Our projects<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Here is what we are already doing and\/or planning to do in the immediate future (in no particular order).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. We want to start working on commencement and leaving of loneliness (e.g., in the event of lockdown or quarantine). What happens when we are placed in a situation of forced solitude\/loneliness, what do we do when we know our loneliness is about to end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. We are looking for participants in a project of the relationship between disability and suicide; we are interested in disability as a potential source of suicidal ideation\/wishes and disability as a result of a suicide attempt. This is led by Justyna Zi\u00f3\u0142kowska and Dariusz Galasinski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. We are interested in marginalised and socially excluded communities. Eva Duda has been exploring relations between migration and disability. She has received funding from the National Science Centre in Poland (under SONATA-18) and is currently the Principal Investigator of a research project entitled: “Intersectionality of migration and disability in contemporary Poland” (contract no UMO-2022\/47\/D\/HS6\/00519).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. We are interested in long covid and post-covid conditions. The upcoming postdoctoral project \u201cContested Conditions in the Wake of Covid-19\u201d (funded under Horizon Europe, MSCA Actions, ERA Fellowship, 2024-2026) is led by Dr. Katja Herges. In the research project, she\u00a0will\u00a0analyze media practices and illness politics of stigmatised and neglected conditions in the aftermath of the pandemic (long covid and ME\/CFS). By closely examining emerging autobiographical forms of these conditions, the project aims to dissect the overlooked relations between autobiography, (digital) media, and illness politics.\u00a0Combined with innovative approaches of public engagement, it seeks to impact the cultural bias against unexplained (post-viral) illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. We have started a project on loneliness in polar expeditions. We are working together with Konrad Opali\u0144ski from the University of Zielona G\u00f3ra, who went to Svalbard in order to interview polar researchers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. We are interested in the representations of loneliness in Polish media. Magdalena Witkowicz and Iga P\u0119kala have been exploring intimacy and social isolation in films about Polish youth. Samuel Maruszewski is currently analysing intersections between gender and loneliness in the docuseries “Boys for the taking” (Ch\u0142opaki do wzi\u0119cia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. We are interested in how the European energy crisis, beginning in February 2022, intersects with health and well-being. Paul Mokrzycki has been exploring the relationship between household energy and weathering stressors among Wroc\u0142aw residents. He is currently analyzing the quantitative and qualitative data collected via interviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. We will be re-examining mortality due to the Great Flood of 1997 in Wroc\u0142aw. Utilizing different population estimates and survey data, Paul Mokrzycki aims to explore the true extent of Poland\u2019s worst flood on those residing in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. There are number of projects related to death and dying, led by Justyna Zi\u00f3\u0142kowska and Dariusz Galasinski. Parts of them are related to the Handbook of Language of Death and Dying, edited by Justyna Zi\u00f3\u0142kowska and Dariusz Galasi\u0144ski for Bloomsbury. They are projects on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 VSED (voluntary stopping of eating and drinking). Part of this project is a PhD prepared by Paulina Grzybek;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 COVID-19 obituaries \u2013 analysis of online memorials (Magdalena Witkowicz is involved in this project)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. We are interested in relations between depression and work. Magdalena Witkowicz is working on a PhD project about sickness absence related to depression. We are looking for research participants who are currently on long-term sick leave because of depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. We are working on a number of publications resulting from our previous projects. They are on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 suicide letters addressed to children;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 experience of touch in epidermolysis bullosa;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
