Dariusz Galasiński
I deal with discourse analysis. For me, this means that I am interested in how people construct their experiences discursively. I pay particular attention to the language forms they use. My research is on the border of two disciplines: linguistics and psychology. I researched how people praise themselves, construct their identities or talk about their emotions. Recently, I have been particularly interested in the experience of mental illness and suicide stories.
I look at mental illnesses through the narratives of a sick person. I take a qualitative, bottom-up perspective, focusing on stories of suffering. I was especially interested in man stories, how men and masculinity are represented in interaction with mental illness and suicide. I have written about male depression (Men’s Discourses of Depression, Palgrave, 2008), experiences of mental illness in fathers (Fathers, Fatherhood and Mental Illness, Palgrave, 2013) and about men’s suicide lists (Discourses of Men’s Suicide Notes, Bloomsbury, 2017). Justyna Ziółkowska (SWPS University) and I have just published a book on the suicide process (Discursive Constructions of the Suicidal Process, Bloomsbury, 2020). Now we are starting to work on a book on the discursive constructs of a suicide, the person who tries or commits suicide. Together with Justyna, we also edit the volume Bloomsbury Handbook on Language of Death and Dying (Bloomsbury).
